Woodland Aroma
These large photographs (mounted on dibond) were part of my MA Final Project. This body of work explored the effects that social media has had on our ability to play. For two weeks I asked several charity shops to keep all the toys donated; three charity shops collected more than 200 stuffed toys. These traditional playthings are being discarded as games and pastimes are increasingly virtual. The movement away from imaginary play has significant implications for the development of empathy. As a symbolic act of deconstruction, I dismembered and unstuffed the variety of toys and moved them into new environments. These surreal photographs were hung on a handprinted wall mural of clouds; below each photograph I installed a manufactured scent of woodland in a gesture that reflects the artificial world in which we now socialise and play.
